Summary

No day is ordinary in a world where Technology and Magic compete for supremacy…But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work。

Hugh d’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man。 Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside。 Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be。 Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming。 Fast。

Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist。 Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady。 Tasked with their protection, she's trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop。 Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself—and Hugh d’Ambray might qualify。

Hugh needs a base, Elara needs soldiers。 Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?

As the prophet says: “It is better to marry than to burn。”

Hugh and Elara may do both。

AWESOME。 I was not sure what to expect from this book。 It felt like a very separate book from the KD series。 Almost could read as a stand alone。 I love the strength of both the main characters and how they have to work together and freakin' loved their relationship。 Some of their quips made me laugh out loud。 I think part of why I loved it so much, was just that I came into it with kind of no expectations。 Like okay, whatever, find out what's happening Hugh before it all ends - figured he would AWESOME。 I was not sure what to expect from this book。 It felt like a very separate book from the KD series。 Almost could read as a stand alone。 I love the strength of both the main characters and how they have to work together and freakin' loved their relationship。 Some of their quips made me laugh out loud。 I think part of why I loved it so much, was just that I came into it with kind of no expectations。 Like okay, whatever, find out what's happening Hugh before it all ends - figured he would make an appearance to help get rid of Roland and we would need this background。 But it was a lot more than that too! 。。。more

Oh my giddy aunt! This book is incredible! Who knew we could ever understand Hugh, let alone like him?!?If you've read the Kate Daniels series then you know Hugh is despicable, yet I find myself liking him after reading this。 Oh he's still a total jerk and completely untrustworthy, but he's still mostly human, and this book allows that side of him to shine。 I'm so glad I read it! It's wonderful insight into Hugh and who he becomes without Roland。 An excellent book! 🙂 Oh my giddy aunt! This book is incredible! Downgraded from 4 stars to 3 because the romance in it followed the Harlequin romance formula 。Yech。 Very predictable and dumb 。

Meh。 I wasn't feeling it, though。It just didn't get me hooked, like Kate very often did。Might get better as it goes forward。 Meh。 I wasn't feeling it, though。It just didn't get me hooked, like Kate very often did。Might get better as it goes forward。 。。。more

You need to read through book 9 of the Kate Daniels series before reading this book, or you won’t understand any of it。 Hugh was a great character in that series and to develop his story more was a wonderful idea。 Of course, now that I love this book and the characters (old and new), I find out the author decided Hugh’s story is “too dark” for this period of COVID - whhhaaa?! - so book two still hasn’t been published。

Not sure how this ended up on my Kindle, but this book is so heavily about war strategy that I couldn't push my way through it。 Not sure how this ended up on my Kindle, but this book is so heavily about war strategy that I couldn't push my way through it。 。。。more

Iron and Magic proves that every protagonists needs a goal, a drive to move the plot。 Sometimes that goal can be building a moat to fit your wife's imported medival castle in Kentucky。 Iron and Magic proves that every protagonists needs a goal, a drive to move the plot。 Sometimes that goal can be building a moat to fit your wife's imported medival castle in Kentucky。 。。。more

I’m living for the dynamic between the leads。 Wasn’t aware this is a side story for an existing universe, so I’m going to pick up the first book for that。Great story if you’re looking for a villain romance。 I need to find more books like this! I love it so much。

Never Disappoints!Elara and Hugh make a terrifying pairing meant to drag Roland and any other threat to its knees。 Great characters, good nuances, and fast paced story。 Ilona Andrews never disappoints。

One of my favorite books in the series。 Probably not least of all because it reads like a romance novel。 I want more stories with this pair。

I have some seriously mixed feelings about this one。 If I take the story on its own, I mostly enjoyed it。The problem is, I can't take it on its own。 It is a part of the Kate Daniels world。 In this context, it feels very revisionist to make Hugh more likeable。Separate, he is certainly a flawed a**hole。 But, he isn't without beyond redemption。 In this version, he respects shifters, as he did not in previous books。 In this book, much of his negative attributes are excused as Roland's wishes。 Given I have some seriously mixed feelings about this one。 If I take the story on its own, I mostly enjoyed it。The problem is, I can't take it on its own。 It is a part of the Kate Daniels world。 In this context, it feels very revisionist to make Hugh more likeable。Separate, he is certainly a flawed a**hole。 But, he isn't without beyond redemption。 In this version, he respects shifters, as he did not in previous books。 In this book, much of his negative attributes are excused as Roland's wishes。 Given in that context, he is a decent anti-hero。I certainly loved the idea of this small community of folk coming together out of need。 I loved the dynamics between the characters。 It is a fun, typical Ilona Andrews read。 。。。more

This turned out to be shockingly good。 I'm in awe that the authors made me care about Hugh d'Ambray。 He's never going to be my favorite character but I liked him enough here to be invested in this story。 Loved Elara - great character。 Now I just want to know what happened to the rest of the trilogy? Was not sure I was ready for a Hugh d'Ambray redemption arc, but the arc is slow and involves work and conscious choice/effort on his part, so it works。 I also love Elara, whoever she is, and I ship this sharp-edged snark and hot sex relationship like whoa。 Was not sure I was ready for a Hugh d'Ambray redemption arc, but the arc is slow and involves work and conscious choice/effort on his part, so it works。 I also love Elara, whoever she is, and I ship this sharp-edged snark and hot sex relationship like whoa。 。。。more

This book is a spin off of the Kate Daniels series and it benefits a lot from the 9 books written to reach this point。 It’s much better than the earlier Kate Daniels books and doesn’t have a bunch of stereotypes。 There are some issues but overall I really liked it。 Also, you don’t need to read the other books to get this one。 There are some spoilers as Hugh recounts some things that happened in the Kate Daniels series but honestly they’re not so grand that it would ruin the story if you read thi This book is a spin off of the Kate Daniels series and it benefits a lot from the 9 books written to reach this point。 It’s much better than the earlier Kate Daniels books and doesn’t have a bunch of stereotypes。 There are some issues but overall I really liked it。 Also, you don’t need to read the other books to get this one。 There are some spoilers as Hugh recounts some things that happened in the Kate Daniels series but honestly they’re not so grand that it would ruin the story if you read this first。 Setting: 5/5Ilona Andrews has amazing world building。 Every series I’ve read is interesting and so unique。 This book takes place in the world of Kate Daniels but instead of Atlanta, we’re in Kentucky。 Plot: 3/5The plot was good and the pacing was alright, but I didn’t get a cohesive sense of the story。 It’s like three plots at the same time。 It comes off more as an intro to this series and filler for the Kate Daniels story。 Additionally it does provide some insight needed for the finale of the Kate Daniels series。 Character Dev: 2/5This book is really a redemption arc for Hugh。 However, I don’t think it was done well。 More so, it just makes excuses for him and lays the blame for everything he did at Roland’s feet。 Also, characters died but their deaths don’t seem to have any real impact。 It’s just “their deaths weighed heavily on him。” Ok, can we see that? Can we see the impact? I wasn’t a fan of it, still enjoyed the story。 However I like a little more meat in my character development。 Writing: 2/5Again, it was ok but it wasn’t great。 Nothing really stood out。 I didn’t write any quotes from this book。 It seemed to like that poetic quality really great writing has。 Diversity: 3/5There was racial and disability representation in this series。 However, I don’t recall if it fully passes the Bechdel test。 There are many women (which I loved) and they talked to other women; but I’m unsure if those conversations were not about men。 Every conversation I could recall seems to be about a man。 But overall, there’s much more diversity in this story than earlier Kate Daniels stories and really all paranormal romance stories I’ve read prior。 。。。more

ExcellentAnother excellent addition to the writings of Ilona Andrews。 This is Hugh's story。 Once the adopted son of Roland, he has been cast aside, leaving him partially broken。 He finds a home in the castle Baile with his less than congenial bride, Elara。 He is preparing for war with the vampires。 He has limited defenses, but his wife has power few people fully understand。 Immerse yourself in this urban fantasy then read everything by Ilona Andrews。 ExcellentAnother excellent addition to the writings of Ilona Andrews。 This is Hugh's story。 Once the adopted son of Roland, he has been cast aside, leaving him partially broken。 He finds a home in the castle Baile with his less than congenial bride, Elara。 He is preparing for war with the vampires。 He has limited defenses, but his wife has power few people fully understand。 Immerse yourself in this urban fantasy then read everything by Ilona Andrews。 。。。more

Great book, loved the characters。 Looking forward to seeing how their relationship evolves in coming books。 I read this book without having read any of the Kate Daniels books so not sure what I did or didn't miss there but still enjoyed it。 I did think the conclusion was a little lacking, especially how there was all this build-up towards (view spoiler)[Roland and Hugh finally confronting each other (hide spoiler)] but it ended quickly and without much drama。 There were also a couple plot point Great book, loved the characters。 Looking forward to seeing how their relationship evolves in coming books。 I read this book without having read any of the Kate Daniels books so not sure what I did or didn't miss there but still enjoyed it。 I did think the conclusion was a little lacking, especially how there was all this build-up towards (view spoiler)[Roland and Hugh finally confronting each other (hide spoiler)] but it ended quickly and without much drama。 There were also a couple plot points that confused me。 (view spoiler)[Why does Hugh never seem to heal himself even though we're told that he can? It was actually one of the best side stories of the Kate Daniels series! I really like the evolution of Hugh's character together with the White Warlock and I'm hoping to find more about her in this last Kate Daniels book。Also a whole spinoff on them would be amazing :) It was actually one of the best side stories of the Kate Daniels series!
